Well, Shut My Mouth!

PAM CROPPED 2013

“Well, shut my mouth!” Surprised? Sometimes I am so surprised that I momentarily find myself at a loss for words. I’m clueless as to why a stare and open mouth accompany my surprise. I’d compare it to spoon feeding a baby. I opened my mouth while they opened theirs. “Well, shut my mouth!” A friend of Job’s thought he had the diagnosis and remedy. He did get a few things right.

“He saves the needy from their sharp words and from the clutches of the powerful. So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth (Job 5:15-16 HCS).” What insightful imagery, I see injustice spouted from lips as they propagate agendas. The unrighteous trample on the rights of the unborn and the aged; yet, God in His sovereignty will one day shut the mouth of injustice.  We place our hope in Him.

Violent Aggressor to Victorious Messenger

PAM CROPPED 2013

Born again, a new creation in Christ. Is that possible? Yes, forever yes and Amen! Look at the conversion of Saul, from violent aggressor to Apostle Paul, victorious messenger. It is nothing short of miraculous. God transformed him on a Damascus road. He was no longer a zealot persecuting Christians; he became a zealous witness and missionary serving as a demonstration of God’s mercy and grace.

“I thank Christ Jesus our Lord because he trusted me and gave me this work of serving him. He gives me strength. In the past I insulted Christ. As a proud and violent man, I persecuted his people. But God gave me mercy because I did not know what I was doing. I did that before I became a believer. But our Lord gave me a full measure of his grace (1 Timothy 1:12-14a ERV).”

Death by Strangulation

PAM CROPPED 2013

Death by strangulation is not mere words scribbled on a coroner’s death certificate. There is no easy way for an innocent victim to go out into eternity. To me, death by strangulation is especially morbid. In their younger years, both my daughter and son, knew they gave me the willies when they playfully but their hands around my neck. Though done in fun, choking is a fear I hold.

Consider the Lords’ warning about our concerns and priorities. We are in danger of choking the life from his word. “The seeds that fell among thorn bushes stand for those who hear the message; but the worries about this life and the love for riches choke the message, and they don’t bear fruit (Matthew 13:22 TEV).”  The Lord is a fruit inspector. What does he see in my life? Am I bearing the fruit of the Spirit or choking his message of grace?

Traveling Companion

CROPPED NOVEMBER 2012 PROFILE PICTURE

There is safety in numbers; sometimes a person planning to take a trip will hire someone to serve in capacity of traveling companion. That may be advantageous; it would also be far more enjoyable to have someone along on sightseeing jaunts. Consider the surprise of traveling companions when Jesus tags along.

“And while they were conversing and discussing together, Jesus Himself caught up with them and was already accompanying them. But their eyes were held, so that they did not recognize Him (Luke 24:15-16 Amplified Bible).” The men were saddened and confused by the crucifixion of Christ. After He unveiled their sight to recognize Him, He vanished.

“And they said to one another, Were not our hearts greatly moved and burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and as He opened and explained to us [the sense of] the Scriptures (Luke 24:32 Amplified Bible)?” Jesus, as traveling companion served as masterful guide to show them the narrow path to His kingdom. They couldn’t keep the experience a secret.

“Then they [themselves] related [in full] what had happened on the road, and how He was known and recognized by them in the breaking of bread. Now while they were talking about this, Jesus Himself took His stand among them and said to them, Peace (freedom from all the distresses that are experienced as the result of sin) be to you (Luke 24:35-36 Amplified Bible)!”

Construction Zones Consternation

In recent days messages on comfort zones and obstacle courses have come to my attention which led me to rework and old article….

CROPPED NOVEMBER 2012 PROFILE PICTURE

As I drive down a busy interstate, I often see warning signs of what is ahead.

You Are Entering a Construction Zone.

Reduce Speed. Merge Into Left Lane.

Right Lane Ends in 1/4 Mile.

I consider construction areas to be such an annoying waste. It makes the trip take more time and makes my way too narrow. It can be so frustrating! It seems the highways are always under construction.

Yes, I do realize they need repairs but I would prefer that to occur when I am not on the highway. You understand; elves could mysteriously come and do the work when nobody sees. I’m acting ridiculous.

Just grip the wheel, slow down, be patient, follow the vehicle up ahead.

The construction will not last forever. This work area will end a short distance ahead.

I am just as frustrated and impatient about construction zones in my life. The Lord is in the construction ministry. He works below the surface of my life and yours. Why is this construction happening? Rough areas lead to wrecks. Bitterness has left some deep potholes. Several storms in life have washed away large areas of foundation. It would not take much to cause me to swerve out of control.

I admit there are also many ruts from doing things the same old way, right or wrong. Those in whose tracks I’ve maneuvered through journeyed that way.  Therefore, I just trudged along in their ruts. I can see the need for the creator to widen my road in order that more pilgrims may make their way onto the highway. There is no doubt; my life is in a sad state of disrepair.

Do I have choices concerning the construction process? Honestly, I say yes and no. Yes, I can keep my hands off the blueprints saying, “Go in, take control; do whatever construction is needed. Take all the time you need.” On the other hand, I can resist, stand my ground with a refusal to comply.

“No, I’m satisfied the way things are. I’m afraid of change. It is not convenient.”

Then the Lord’s construction will still be taking place, but at a much slower pace. He will accomplish needed work in and around my busy schedule. The work will be more tedious and rather awkward. How do I react to this work? Will I be patient and submissive? In spite of my fear of change, I am thankful. I know I need to make corrections and that I cannot achieve that through self-effort.

No matter how many times I make a resolution or pledge reform, self will attempt to regain control. I am in need of changes from within. Who is in charge of this work? As you drive through construction areas on the highway, you see signs:

“Men At Work.”

In those construction zones within us, Gods’ Holy Spirit does all work. He was there at work in the creation of His world. Who better could re-create a life? Men do influence us by outward circumstances. Only God constructs from within.

One more sign I observe in construction zones is a very welcome sight.

It reads, “End Of Construction.”

We will not see the end of our personal construction until we reach our final destination, reaching our eternal heavenly home with The Lord.

The next time you enter a construction zone, relax. Let it be a reminder of all the work going on at that very moment in your life. Your journey finds you on the Kings highway, your highway of holiness.  (Is.35:8)

Each Step

CROPPED NOVEMBER 2012 PROFILE PICTURE

Serving in the pastorate is not for the faint of heart. The enemy of our souls attempts to hinder and halt each step. Those called of God wisely watch their step.

Prayerfully prepared, they step forward to proclaim God’s infallible word.

Equipped, enabled and empowered they step up to the pulpit, [podium].

Humbled, they step aside, giving reigns to God’s Holy Spirit.

Trusting, they step back, giving God all glory and praise!

“Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him,

Nor speak anymore in His name,’

But His word was in my heart like

     a burning fire

Shut up in my bones;

I was weary of holding it back,

And I could not (Jeremiah 20:9 NKJ).”

Call of the Wild

CROPPED NOVEMBER 2012 PROFILE PICTURE

If my memory serves me, I believe there was both a book and movie titled “Call of the Wild.” Wilderness adventures make great stories but in reality, many people get lost in the wilderness when hiking. If they survive, they will undoubtedly have a story to tell but they will not likely describe the experience as an adventure.  If we embark on a spiritual wilderness journey and experience temptations, we should stay alert. The devil calls in the wilderness. (Matthew 4:1-11)

His call might surprise you; he quotes Scripture. “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: He will give His angels orders concerning you, and they will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone (Matthew 4:6b HCS).” His call can be tempting; it is always deceptive and deadly. Jesus though tempted did not sin or waver. “Jesus told him, ‘It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God (Matthew 4:7 HCS).”

Switcheroo

CROPPED NOVEMBER 2012 PROFILE PICTURE

I do not want to be conned, duped or hoodwinked. It would be a crying shame to fall prey to heresy. Some out there have done the switcheroo and I must remain alert. Satan is always up to his tricks, trying to play with my mind. The Prophet Isaiah, speaking to his generation, could have just as accurately assessed our society. The people were adept at switcheroo.

People are prone to pervert truth. God does not ignore the distortion. “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own opinion and clever in their own sight (Isaiah 5:20-21 HCS).”

“Woe is me,” if I start believing what is untrue. Shame on me, if I neglect to back up my beliefs with truth found in Scripture. The Holy Spirit is the source of discernment. He sends off a silent alarm when lies are peddled, enabling me to accurately assess the message. Parents dogmatically tell their children “Don’t believe everything you hear!”  Woe to all who believe the switcheroo.

Self-Diagnosis

CROPPED NOVEMBER 2012 PROFILE PICTURE

Disorders are diagnosed, classified, and magnified. I know that self-diagnosis can lead to disaster; yet, it also leads to heaven. I am not claiming to be a sufferer of the latest disorder. I have determined that the Lord has blessed me with ED Order. Read over the symptoms and see if it might be your self-diagnosis and analysis as well.

·         Predestined

·         Conformed

·         Called

·         Justified

·         Glorified

“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. For those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be firstborn among many brothers. And those He predestined, He also called; and those He called, He also justified; and those He justified, He also glorified (Romans 8:28-30 HCS).

Tests

CROPPED NOVEMBER 2012 PROFILE PICTURE

Not many of us enjoy taking tests; the older we get the more anxiety we feel. I have lived in several different states and each motor vehicles department has different driver’s license regulations. In a few, I had to take written tests. In Florida, I also had to take a road test before transferring my driver’s license from a previous state. I studied the driver’s manuals after each move, in preparation for written examinations.

Life is a continuous test. How well am I prepared to take each test? Do I skim or study the manual? “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15 NKJ).” My study of driver’s manuals paid off; I usually made a 100% score. I don’t attribute the score to a high IQ; I understood the connection between diligent study and passing. I needed a driver’s license.

Do I perceive my need for consistent study of God’s word? In a box of my parent’s important papers, I discovered a yellowed document. A Sunday school department director had awarded a perfect attendance to my father. At the age of seventeen, he had made group study of the Bible a priority. I treasure this tangible reminder that Dad hid God’s word in his heart. He was committed and consistent.

“Your word I have hidden in my heart,

That I might not sin against You (Psalm 119:11 NKJ).”
